peace amid chaos

peace.jpg

Sometimes when putting together images for a client’s proofbook I’m actually surprised at how a rather chaotic session can still produce peaceful looking images. This baby was teething something awful and apparently had a tummy ache as well on the day of her shoot. Tears flowed, drooling was profuse, and her body remained stiff and contorted for a good 90% of our time together. I really questioned whether we should continue on several occasions.

And yet in the midst of all the chaos there would be these tiny pockets of peace. Moments when it appeared she’d suddenly been cleansed of all that was distressing her and left with a tranquility not attainable except through passionate expression of feeling.

We begin our human journey knowing that joy is our birthright, acutely aware of when our path deviates from it, and boldly declaring our most genuine and honest feelings whether or not they’re politically correct or make others uncomfortable. Babies instinctively know that passionate expression is where it’s at and are fearless in their display of it. And I wonder if all that I am seeking to learn in this life experience is what was already in place for me when I first arrived.

Maybe life really is a circle after all.
