peek at me

peek.jpg

The other day I visited a few photoblogs and began following their links to other blogs. Those links led to yet other new links and before I knew it I had managed to lose several hours, and travel such a distance from the original blog I couldn’t even imagine finding my way back to where I began. By this time I was sorta lost and clueless as to where I had landed and only knew that all those photos and words I’d viewed had merged together and were flowing in a runny, jumbled, messy mosaic that made my head hurt.

So much coming at us these days. How many channels do you receive on your television? How adeptly can your computer hurtle across the internet? More, more, more……..give us more…….that’s what we want, right?

When does all this blogging, “my spacing” and “American Idolizing” cease being creative self-expression and start becoming blatant exhibitionism? Are we really trying to connect with those like-minded individuals who might appreciate our innate gifts or we simply and desperately attempting to see how many eyes we can pull in our direction? “Peek at me”, we call out to anyone who might stumble upon our URL or flip the channel and observe our antics on the latest reality series. “Am I special?…….Am I talented?…….Am I attractive?”

And yet………

In our pursuit of more (adoration, possessions, stimulus) I believe there is a faint, scratchy little voice inside each of us meekly asking to be heard. Difficult to decipher exactly what is being said when everything outside us is clamoring so incessantly……but could it be that the muffled voice is actually saying “less”?

What are we really looking for when we say to another, “peek at me”? Is it possible that what we mean is, “look past what you observe that is obvious…….remove anything that detracts from your seeing……and *really* peek into me”? Are not the most moving and exhilarating interactions those that occur between individuals who have truly seen, accepted and cherished each other for exactly who they are? Those brave and sincere souls with eyes wide open who declare, “I love you not in spite of your humanness, but because of it……..because of how you reveal yourself to me”.

Perhaps it’s not “more” we’re truly after at all, but less, with more meaning.
