you complete me

It’s tempting for those of us who’ve accumulated a bit of life experience to lecture the young about love. “Love is not a mathematical equation,” we may smugly inform them, “one-half plus one-half does not equal one whole.” “Become whole first within yourself, then you may attract another whole and the two of you will add up to greater than the sum of your parts, yet be one. Got that?!?”
But lessons of love cannot be taught. One cannot simply read about love and understand it. We may theorize for decades and still be innocent to its power when it shows up at our door. Love rushes in and demands surrender no matter how sophisticated we are or how complete we believe ourselves to be. And everything we thought was true collapses in the face of this love.
Love is a paradox. I know its presence can heal even the deepest wounds. I know it can transform anything. Maybe it can bring wholeness to one who feels less than whole……who am I say? When it comes right down to it, it really is simple. In the immortal words of John Lennon: All you need is love.
There’s nothing you can know that isn’t known.
Nothing you can see that isn’t shown.
Nowhere you can be that isn’t where you’re meant to be.
It’s easy.
All you need is love, all you need is love.~John Lennon with Paul McCartney
