that’s all I need

Hard to believe this baby girl is looking as comfortable as she is in this photograph, considering she was actually hoarding a vast assortment of items underneath her body at the time I released the shutter. There were stuffed animals, a blanket, various plastic toys and a purple sippy cup, all protectively concealed beneath her warm chubby physique. Perhaps she viewed me as some sort of material threat to her security?
I was able to get this one frame before she sat up and preceded to take inventory of the goods. Out of the blue a scene from the old Steve Martin movie, “The Jerk” came to my mind. He was leaving his home, saying he didn’t need anything, but then picks up an ashtray…….
“And that’s it and that’s the only thing I need, is this. Just this ashtray. And this paddle game, the ashtray and the paddle game and that’s all I need. And this remote control. The ashtray, the paddle game, and the remote control, and that’s all I need. And these matches. The ashtray, and these matches, and the remote control and the paddle ball. And this lamp. The ashtray, this paddle game and the remote control and the lamp and that’s all I need. I don’t need one other thing, not one. The paddle game, and the chair, and the remote control, and the matches, for sure. And this. And that’s all I need. The ashtray, the remote control, the paddle game, this magazine and the chair.”
I am surely aging myself by quoting a 28 year old movie (is it really possible it could be that old?), but as dumb of a film as it is every time I’ve seen it I laugh hysterically. I looked at this little girl and oddly remembered Steve Martin in his bathrobe with his pants down around his ankles holding all those various items and I’ve been dying to see the movie again ever since. But I can’t find it locally!
No doubt I’ve lost many reading this now who haven’t a clue of what I’m talking about…..but if you get a chance to watch this very stupid, pretty funny old movie you should really check it out.
Pure fun and unadulterated laughter: that’s all I need.
