just once

because everything here apparently needs us,
this fleeting world,
which in some strange way
keeps calling to us.
Us, the most fleeting of all.
Once for each thing.
Just once; no more.
And we too, just once.
And never again.
But to have been this once,
completely, even if only once:
to have been at one with the earth,
seems beyond undoing.
~Rainer Maria Rilke
Part of the appeal of this image to both this little boys mother and I (well, aside from the fact that he is actually stationary for a brief moment), is the inside knowledge that while he has such a big boy cool stance going on for a two year old, he is sucking two fingers all the while.
Just goes to show you, that oftentimes it’s that which we *don’t* necessarily see with our eyes that tells the greater story.

PS Have I mentioned I happen to love Rainer Maria Rilke?
