be you

This is a squirrely thing: being able to fully embrace and even love the entire odd and unique package that makes up who we are as individuals, while at the same time recognizing that at the very core of our being we are all in fact the same. Which means learning to embrace and even love the odd and unique people around us. We seem to have trouble with this.
It can be painful to feel different from others……to look different, respond to life differently, or have unusual preferences. Sometimes the discomfort of this “different-ness” causes one to change or at least subdue themselves in order to fit in and feel they belong to a group or a family. I did this for years, and still fight the urge to make life a little easier for myself and just “be normal”.
Sometimes I do have trouble being exactly me, but I’m working on it, and am certain that the better I get at this the more fun life will be become, and the things/people/experiences I‘m supposed to have will find their way towards me. It’s exhausting to try to live up to other people’s standards and expectations, and incredibly frustrating to measure one’s progress by observing how others are doing.
While it’s simple to say, it’s not always so easy to put into practice: be you.
