going down

Buzz: This isn’t flying. This is falling with style!
~From the movie “Toy Story”
It wasn’t supposed to happen this way. I was attempting a simple window lit portrait of the baby not yet fully sitting so he was propped in the corner of the couch. I was sitting on the other end of the couch across from him indian style with camera ready. But he was a weeble, and when he wobbled he came flying forward towards the lens of my camera so quickly I was certain his head would catch the end of it. Instinctively, as he flew towards me, I flew backward…..falling off the couch and onto the tile floor landing hard on my behind. It hurt! But ever the photographer, I still got the shot. And was only a little embarrassed when the very concerned looking dad asked me if I was alright and needed help getting up.
The resulting image is a mess…..accidentally blurry with fingers cut off and funky lighting going on……but I like it anyway. Why, you may wonder? Because while the baby may indeed be going down, he’s going down with such spirit and gusto I can’t help but be inspired by his exuberant energy. He is falling with style. I obviously couldn’t see how I looked going down at the same time, but I’m fairly certain I didn‘t do it with half his panache. I have much to learn from him.
Things don’t always happen the way we plan or hope they will. Suddenly and unexpectedly we may find ourselves going down and when in a free fall gravity’s gonna take over and there’s not much you can do in that moment. It’s only your thoughts that you have control over. I look at this little boys face and in my imagination he’s thinking, “I may be going down, but whoa baby, what a ride!”
Falling with style.

Moments later, this time sitting securely on dad’s lap…..he’s okay. (Except maybe the side of his face hurts?!?)
