boy with dirty feet does nothing

dirtyfeet.jpg

He did nothing in particular, and did it very well.
~W.S. Gilbert

My favorite moment of a shoot. Absolutely nothing remarkable is going on but everyone’s okay with it. It’s quiet and calm. No pressure, no rush to accomplish or be somewhere else, no need to cross something off the never ending “to-do list”. My job is just to be with the child and see where it takes me. Notice the small things I so often neglect.

In these moments when I sit on the floor with a camera in front of me, I am finally free from the constraints of time. I give no consideration to what anyone else might be thinking nor how they may be judging me, I am without judgment myself, and I float like a cloud because I understand my job is simply to do nothing. Nothing at all is required of me but that I take notice of all that is beautiful and unblemished and ripe with potentiality blooming in front of my eyes.
