the escape artist

If I wanted to, I could fill this photo journal with nothing but images of little ones trying to get away from me and my camera. I have heaps of them. When they are in they want out and when they are up they want down…….but mostly they just want *free*. Somehow they’ve gotten the crazy notion in those little noggins of theirs that a camera is a form of restraint not unlike a car seat or highchair, and to be avoided at all costs. So they escape. Quickly. Constantly. Masterfully. These little beings are sophisticated finaglers alright, and capable of dazzling feats of escapology.

Since children and babies are closer to the source of life than us big people, they instinctively understand that we’re here for joy and expansion, and life is forever urging us to move out beyond our known boundaries. They hear the inner call “this way–this way”, and they unflinchingly heed it, never questioning where it leads.

This little guy sees the way towards something bigger than the confines of his mother’s protection and his expression reminds me that the limitations I often feel are only imagined. From the imprisonment of narrow thinking there is always an escape.
