I will occasionally encourage a little kiss between siblings because moms really like to see moments of tender interaction in their children, and if it works and appears genuine, these images sell.

I always encourage kisses between partners when doing a maternity shoot, because they usually need this gentle coaxing to lighten up a bit, get over the camera and into each other. And if it works, and the couple look genuinely hot for each other, these images sell.

But I never encourage a parent to kiss their child. It’s simply not necessary, because as I am adoring their offspring with my camera, the parent naturally joins in, and before long there seems to be this gravitational pull luring them in closer and closer, until without any sort of direction from me they must kiss the little object of their affection.

He scooped her up in his arms to comfort her and I knew what was coming so I quickly moved in close to get the shot showing more intimacy. I was right there in front of them both but they paid me no attention at all. It was only his kiss that mattered. A soft and gentle kiss only for her, not the camera. These images sell, but even if they didn’t I would go on making them, because kisses that come tenderly, naturally and without direction are always the sort of thing I like to see and experience.
