As the time draws near for holiday portraits and all the glittering idealization that often accompanies them, I will find respite in photographing moments less orchestrated and sparkly clean. The overturned garbage can and broken down office chair serving as makeshift skateboard jump holder certainly aren’t portrait worthy (and possibly bordering on white-trashy?), but the scene speaks to me of the simple pleasures of an ordinary childhood day. I’m reminded of the joy of unstructured neighborhood play, making do with what you have, and not at all feeling lack.
For the next couple of months I imagine it will be the images *not* worthy of a holiday card that I will gravitate to, and be most inspired by.
