reverence and awe

Another photo from the newborn shoot of a few weeks ago that I previously wrote about. I could pretty much pull up any image from this shoot and immediately feel warm and good in response to it, and since I like feeling that way I decided I’d share again here. Maybe someone else viewing will feel warm and good as well.

Music from James Taylor was playing in the background. This man’s wife and mother were beside me observing the scene, softly weeping from hearts bursting so full and overflowing they simply had to spill out. These were people I hadn’t known just weeks prior yet I wasn’t at all an outsider here. I wasn’t shy or fearful, inhibited or doubtful, nor any of those things that keep me separate from others. It almost seemed surreal the way we were all swirling about together in this tender moment, where it was as if edges had dissolved, leaving us free to merge into that most wonderful state of oneness.

Reverence and awe are not just to be found in church sanctuaries or on mountaintops. They don’t belong only to the wise and enlightened. They’re our birthright……a gift we have only to open and receive again and again. Why is it so easy to overlook the miraculousness inherent in everything?
