bookends

My natural inclination is to look for the symmetry of a given scene, to the degree that it takes a conscience effort on my part to break from the habit so as not to be predictable and boring in my image making. But there are moments, such as this one, when deciding how to frame the shot I felt my heart skip a beat at the perfect symmetry in front of me.
This would mean nothing to me had it been a set up shot, but the fact that two random people who knew not each other nor the child sat themselves down on the corresponding far ends of their respective benches–like bookends–is enough to make this photographer revel in the fact that the world is forever expressing itself poetically.
Of course, I would have fallen over backwards with joy if the woman on the left had chosen on this day to wear her dark pants, sat a bit more forward and folded her hands in her lap…..but that’s just being greedy, I know.
